hey everyone,
wondering if anyone has used sealskins socks as a vapor barrier sock? I have been trying them a bit but not overnight, definately keep my boots dryer but they are supposed to breath?
Hoping to do an overnight in a few weeks....Thanks jefe

I've been using Seal Skinz as a VB sock for a several years. They claim to breath, but that's not been my experience.
After a couple of days of continuous wearing they do give my ankles a bit of a rash. Just like every other VB sock I've used. But my shoes stay dry.

I used them last year and they worked. This year, in addition to RBH socks, I am experimenting with the Reed Chillcheater Aquatherm wading socks. They are non-breathable and very comfortable to wear. Designed for the paddling community, I think they make a great crossover item because you can so easily layer socks over them, something that I struggle to do with the RBH socks.

I have Goretex outer socks which work very well; sealskinz made my feet pruny.

Ohhhhhhh good idea Jefe! Never thought of using my seal skins for that purpose. going to see how well they breath tomorrow.

I tried using my SealSkinz as a pseudo-VBL yesterday, on a cold Autumnal road ride of about four hours. I wore my regular '3 season' shoes and some light WP/B over-boots.
The day before, in almost identical conditions, I rode the same set-up but used two pairs of regular socks. My feet were much warmer in the SealSkinz combination.
I'm sold, for now, although when Winter bites here it will over to the over-sized GTX boots and the full RBH VaprThrm insulated socks.

I tried out my sealskins yesterday, I just put them on with no other sock. I think next time I might try and use a think cycling sock under the Sealskins. My feet were cold, I think the coldest it got was high 20's. I was using my PI alp enduro shoes, with a thermal toe cover. I'm going to have to invest in a full shoe cover. I can see how these will work however, I just need to keep trying different things out.

Neil, it is all about circulation and insulation...the vapor barrier is more to keep moisture out of your insulation. If the socks made the shoes tight at all, it will negate the insulation, so I have found anyways. I used my seal skins all last year, granted no huge days, but there seemed to be little evaporation thru those suckers. I use some big ass winter hiking boots, I would go even bigger next time to fir more footbed type stuff under foot without pressing the foot into the upper shoe. I was even thinking a flip flop under foot would be great..but haven't tried it yet. I do run a thin ski sock under the Seal Skins, then a huge wool over sock if it is really cold...takes some serious expermentation, and if it gets warmer than you think your feet sweat like mad=bad news!
