Gear reviews, Shelters » Competition Tarp 2 by Terra Nova Equipment
The simple light structure of a tarp is great for building different types of shelter systems in the backcountry. It features reinforced eyelets, webbing tapes for multiple set up options, uses their high quality silicon nylon Competition fabric and is a lighter option to the Adventure Tarp. Waterproof Tarp 7′ 10″ x 9′ 6″ in a Forest Green color that folds up nicely to be stored in a black nylon pull string bag that is included.
Eyelets – 8 (with ridge line tie off)
Weight approx. – 1.2 lbs
Material – Nylon 5000mm HH (comparison to the Adventure Tarp’s 4000mm HH Poly)

This is a pretty basic tarp that’s big enough to comfortably cover 2 people + gear (but not bikes).
We used it for a 4 month singletrack bikepacking trip where weight needed to be kept to a minimum. There were nights it would have been nice to have a tent in order to reduce mosquito annoyance. But bugs do tend to go to sleep once it gets cold enough.
Most nights we just used it as a ground sheet and didn’t bother to set it up. Helps if you have trees around to really pitch it strong enough against a big storm.
Oh, you need some short guy lines to tie it, too. Still adds up to less than even the lightest cuben fiber tents, esp for 2 people. Rolls up and fits nicely next to a handlebar bag, sweet roll, etc.
I’d highly recommend it, and the general concept of tarp camping over a heavier tent.
