Gear reviews, Shoes » Pearl Izumi X-Alp PRO

I’ve seen a few riders wearing the Pearl Izumi X-Alp Enduro shoes for bikepacking rides and races.  It seems that PI has stepped up and added a lighter, stiffer version to the lineup.  This could be a great shoe for self supported riding/racing.  I believe at least one 2009 TD racer that was on a set of proto’s…

Bought these on sale 50% off at lbs, needed another pair of shoes and I like these a little better than my Sidi’s. A little more room in the toe box and more like a light hiking shoe with a cleat. Havn’t ridden any epic rides in them yet but, have commuted in them and shorter stuff they feel great. I will update this when I have truly given them a thrashing.

Are the ones you got the Pro version? Since they were half off, it would seem more likely that they are one of the other X-Alps, you might want to move your review to the correct X-alp page.

I was assigned the job of attempting to destroy a few pairs of these shoes for Pearl over the past year and a half. 6000+ miles of beating and one pair was toast, but my current pair is still going strong. These are, without a doubt, the best-suited shoe for ultra-race I’ve ever seen. I wear them for all the mountain biking I do now. The sole flex in front of the cleat allows very comfortable hiking, the cushioning provides just enough forgiveness that my feet never bothered me in 18 days of racing the TD, and the stiffness of the carbon plate keeps an efficient power transfer. I honestly can’t say enough good things about this shoe.
